Korea's RFID Pilot Projects See Positive Results
August 26, 2005
The analysis of the 12 RFID pilot projects carried out by Korea's NCA (National Computerization Agency) starting in 2004 shows a significant increase in the introduction of RFID technology into Korean industries. The percentage of Korean industries willing to participate in RFID projects rose from 33% to 61%. The Korean government invested 4.5 billion won and 5 billion won in the projects in 2004 and 2005, respectively, and the procurement of domestic-made hardware and middleware rose from 26% to 88%.

In 2004, Korea's RFID technology lagged behind other advanced countries by roughly two to three years, but the gap, except for chips, is said to have disappeared almost entirely in 2005. Five out of six RFID pilot projects starting 2004 have been completed on time in August 2005, the exception being a project to optimize shipping and logistics efficiency. NCA is also benchmarking the other six projects implemented in 2005 and plans to carry out RFID projects in more than ten public agencies in 2006.
